Israeli Meretz Party demand the abolition of a "Talmudic Garden" in el-Bustan
July 19, 2010

Members of the Meretz Party in Jerusalem Municipality Council submitted a petition to court today to demand the abolition of a project which aims to establish a so-called " King's Garden" on the ruins of people's homes in the Bustan neighborhood of Silwan. The Jerusalem Municipality plans to implement this project despite the objections of international observers and of the home owners and land owners of el-Bustan, who consider the establishment of this garden to be an extension of the illegal "City of David" settlement in the nearby neighborhood of Wadi Hilweh. Meretz Party members claimed in the petition filed today that the garden project is illegal, declaring that the municipal officials are abusing their powers without regard to established legal standards.
