Clashes in Silwan and the arrest of Mahdi Siam
September 25, 2014

Clashes broke out in the neighborhood of Wadi Hilweh in Silwan between the Israeli forces and the young men concurrently with the arrival of dozens of settlers to perform their religious Talmudic rituals on occasion of the Jewish New Year. The residents of Silwan complained about the Israeli police closure of Wadi Hilweh Street since noon in preparation from the settlers’ annual march; note that Wadi Hilweh Street is considered one of the main streets in Silwan which the residents continuously use but the police did not care and closed it using iron barricades and deployed their forces between the alleys of the houses. The residents explained that several settlers deliberately provoked the residents and verbally insulted them during their march and also tried to assault the children who were playing in front of their houses; note that they attempted to assault a 3-year old child. Verbal altercations and clashes using hands broke out between the Israeli forces and young men and the forces broke into several houses under the pretext of “throwing stones.” The forces arrested Mahdi Siam from the neighborhood of Wadi Hilweh. In a related matter, the police arrested Khaled Al-Zeer and Murad under the pretext of “Assaulting a settler.”
