April 6, 2019

On Saturday morning, Nabih Basiti self-demolished his home in the Old City of Jerusalem following an order by the occupation municipality to avoid paying "the demolition fees and fines" to the municipality.

Nabih Basti said that the occupation municipality forced him to demolish the "external walls and the ceiling and the remaining poles",knowing that he demolished it from the inside in 2016 making it unfit for housing.

Basti added that the municipality recently summoned him and demanded that he removes and demolishes the rest of the house from the outside under the pretext of "vandalizing the heritage inside the Old City." The municipality gave him until the 7th of this month to carry out the demolition, otherwise its crew will do so on his expense.

Basti also added that the area of the house is 65 square meters. It was built in 1999. Three years ago, the municipality issued the final demolition order after years of delay in an attempt to obtain a building permit. Despite demolishing it from the inside, he was forced to also demolish the outside walls.
