June 29, 2020

The Israeli Supreme Court held a session on Monday, to consider the petitions filed against the "Airlift / Cable Car" project, in Jerusalem.

Lawyer Sami Arshid explained to Wadi Hilweh Information Center that the Supreme Court judges listened to the objections submitted in the name of the people of Wadi Hilweh neighborhood in Silwan and the merchants of the Old City of Jerusalem, on the project of the cable car intended to be implemented from the old train station "Al-Baqa'a" in West Jerusalem, up to Dung Gate and reaching Prophet David Gate and the entrance to Wadi Hilweh.

Lawyer Arshid confirmed during the session that the project is a political and serves settlement purposes, and aims to control the Wadi Hilweh area and the entrances to the Old City, and the movement of tourists and visitors to the Old City and direct them into buildings controlled by Elad settlement association.

Lawyer Arshid added that the project contradicts with international and even Israeli laws, as it did not take into account the status and importance of the city of Jerusalem and the Old City, as his project will work to change its features.

Lawyer Arshid denied that the project had "tourism goals and economic feasibility," as Elad settlement association claims, and said: "These are arguments to beautify the project that has political goals."
