Clashes in Issawiya
Israeli police, accompanied by troops from the Israeli army, surrounded the Palestinian village of Issawiya, northeast of Jerusalem, yesterday and closed off all but the easternmost entrance to the village, the furthest entrance from Jerusalem, following clashes which erupted between Israeli troops and residents of the village. In doing so, the police carried out a collective punishment over the more than 18,000 Palestinians who live in the village. According to one villager, “the Israeli authorities have intensified their policies of subjugation and repression against the Palestinian neighborhoods of Jerusalem. These policies are a part of the Israeli government's plans to further Judaize the city and to put more pressure on the Palestinians in every way."
