Shufat in Clashes enter their third day running
January 21, 2011

Violent clashes are currently underway in Shuafat Camp, East Jerusalem. Israeli troops have been firing fired tear gas at Palestinian homes and used rubber bullets on protesters. Confrontations erupted after troops tightened restrictions at the checkpoint at the camp's entrance, leading to the violent dispersal of several young residents who tried to cross the barrier. 7 Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets. Residents of Shuafat have speculated that the eventual plan for the camp is permanent closure of the checkpoint, isolating its residents entirely. Such actions would have a ghetto-izing effect on the already poverty-stricken refugee camp, who rely on the checkpoint as their access point to the rest of Jerusalem.
