"Dad, read to me" connects children to Jerusalem through family and reading
Seventy children from across East Jerusalem participated in the "Dad, read to me" fun and educational activity yesterday organized by DAP hip hop artist Tamer Nafar and Madaa Creative Center. The event included a tour of Wadi Hilweh neighborhood in Silwan, where children learned about the history of the area, and a visit to the children's cemetery. The tour concluded with the symbolic release of dozens of balloons into the air carrying the children's wishes and messages to the world. The children were then taken to Wadi Hilweh playground, where a community elder read stories, a clown entertained the crowd, children participated in group reading and finally a graffiti mural about Jerusalem was created by the children. Participants were overjoyed with how well the day went, and its focus on fostering interest in reading and connection to Jerusalem. The activity, which sought to strengthen Palestinian children's relationships to their parents and to reading and literature, was considered a success
