The family of Amira was forced on Saturday morning to demolish three residential apartments in the area of “Der Al-Amood” in the village of Sur Baher south of Jerusalem in order to avoid paying financial fines to the Israeli authorities. Wadi Hilweh Information Center was informed that Amira family demolished two buildings that were under construction and are owned by Mohammad Amira and his brother Nidal. Mohammad demolished a two-storey building where each is 200 square meters; note that he was planning to live in this building along with his family which consists of 5 individuals, while Nidal demolished a building that only has one 150-square meters apartment and he was also planning to live in with his family that consists of 7 individuals. Mohammad Amira explained that the family started building on its land a year ago and a decision was issued them to demolish the apartments but was postponed until the court issued its final decision 45 days ago and gave the family until last Saturday to execute the demolition, otherwise the municipality crews will demolish the apartments and the family has to pay 200 thousand NIS. Mohammad added that during the court session, the defense lawyer presented several maps to the judge that show that part of the land falls in the West Bank territories but the judge refused the maps and issued his decision regardless. Mahmoud pointed out that building the 3 apartments cost them more than 500 thousand NIS. He said: “I self-demolished the apartments because I am unable to keep paying additional fines to the Israeli authorities, especially that I am unemployed because of a problem in my spinal cord.”
