March 18, 2016

The occupation police released on Friday the activist and member of follow-up committee in the village of Esawyeh, Mohammad Abu Hummos, after arresting and detaining him on charges of “planning to organize a sports Marathon to counter the Judaizing Marathon organized by the occupation municipality.

Abu Hummos explained to Wadi Hilweh Information Center that the occupation forces raided his house at 4 a.m. and arrested him. He was transferred to Salah Eddin Street police station and was detained for several houses on charges of organizing a sports event concurrently with the marathon organized by the occupation municipality.

Abu Hummos said that the occupation municipality organized a marathon in Jerusalem for the sixth consecutive year to ser political reasons not sports. This marathon attempts to show Jerusalem is the capital of Israeli and is unified. He said: “We confirm as a whole that Jerusalem is an Arab city and we will not accept these Judaizing activities.”

Abu Hummos appealed to foreign countries not to participate in this marathon which affects the cultural attractions and monuments in the Holy City.

The occupation municipality had organized its yearly marathon on Friday and closed many streets and roads in Jerusalem which obstructed the movement of Jerusalemites.

Foreign and Jewish activists organized a sit-in in Jabal Al-Masharef and in West Jerusalem to condemn the marathon organized by the municipality. Participants wore shirts with the words “Fifth Marathon of Jerusalem…for the Arabic identity of Jerusalem…You’re participating in a sports marathon not political…you are in the occupied Palestinians lands” in both Arabic and English.
