Hatem explained to WHIC that he got off the bus with his twin brother towards their school concurrently with the presence of limited clashes in the area; he headed to the grocery store before entering the school.
He said: “While I was crossing the road looking for my brother, a soldier fired a rubber bullet towards me from close distance and I fell on the ground.”
The child who is still receiving treatment at Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital added that six soldiers surrounded and severely beat him after the injury. He was also hit on his head despite the bleeding and severe pain he was in. The soldiers took him to another area in Ras Al-Amoud and a soldier called an ambulance for him.
Yassin Abu Mayaleh, the child’s father, said: “I received a phone call from the school to inform me that my son was arrested. I quickly headed towards the school and found the police and ambulance in the area. After nearly 15 minutes, a soldier informed me that my son Hatem was injured by a rubber bullet in his head. I was then allowed to see him in the ambulance while being treated and he was crying from the severe pain he was in.”
He added that the soldiers decided to release Hatem on condition of attending an interrogation under the pretext of throwing stones after being released from the hospital; the father received a call for interrogation for his son.
Abu Mayaleh added that he transferred his son to Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital. When he arrived, several soldiers were waiting at the hospital and conducted an interrogation with the child.
