Bab Al-Rahmeh cemetery- The injury of an elderly and an attempt to place iron fences between graves
May 2, 2018

The Israeli occupation forces assaulted the residents of Silwan who confronted the workers of the Nature and Parks Authority that tampered with the graves in the cemetery of Bab Al-Rahmeh in Jerusalem.

Wadi Hilweh Information Center / Silwan reported that the Israeli soldiers assaulted a group of Silwan residents who were in the cemetery of Bab Al-Rahmeh resulting in the injury of the elderly Khalil Nimer Abbasi who was given initial treatment inside the cemetery and then taken by ambulance to receive treatment.

The center explained that the Nature Authority tried on Tuesday to put iron fences between the graves, and thus the separation of graves from each other.

The authority’s crews began digging works in the tombs and the surrounding area last Sunday, smashing some tombstones under the pretext of putting iron fences in place, and spraying chemicals on trees and grass.

On Monday, the residents of Silwan objected to the placement of iron columns and fences on the graves because of the violation of the sanctity of the dead on the one hand and the difficulty of laying the dead as they will be adjacent to the graves on the other hand. They confirmed that they are entitled to do all the work inside the cemetery, stressing that those works in the cemetery seek to confiscate additional areas of it in favor of settlement projects. In fact, the authority’s crews moved the poles and fences away from some of the graves, but the workers came back the next day and attempted to place fences between the graves to isolate them from each other.
