Self-demolishing 3 houses in Silwan
August 4, 2020

On Tuesday, the Aloun family self-demolished their home in the town of Beit Hanina by a decision of the occupation municipality, under the pretext of building without a permit.

Mohamed Aloun explained that the municipality issued a decision at the end of last month to demolish the house without the possibility of freezing or delaying the demolition for an additional period, explaining that for 8 years he has been trying to license it and regulate the area, and the municipality imposed a building violation fine worth 30,000 shekels on him.

Aloun explained that the lawyer told him that the municipal bulldozers would carry out the demolition at any time, so he had to demolish it to avoid paying the demolition fee and to protect his family from the occupation forces storming his home and emptying its contents.

Mohammad Aloun added that 7 people live in his 90-square-meter house.

On Monday, Issa Aweisat self-demolished his house in Jabal Al-Mukabber, and explained that the house has been in existence for 5 years, and he has been trying since that time to license it and delay the demolition.

Aweisat explained that the municipality crews stormed his home twice a month, until two weeks ago when the municipality issued a final decision to demolish it, and in the event that the demolition was not carried out, its bulldozers would do so, and he had to pay an amount of 80,000 shekels, a demolition fee for the municipality's staff and the accompanying forces.

Aweisat added that the municipality imposed a construction violation fine on him worth 60,000 shekels, which he was obligated to date to making the monthly payment.

Iyad Abu Sbeih also self-demolished his house in Silwan and set up a tent near the rubble to house him and his family of 10.

Abu Sbeih explained that the occupation forces and municipality crews stormed his house in the middle of last month, attacked the family and emptied some of the contents of the house, during which the lawyer managed to delay the demolition, then the municipality returned and issued the final demolition decision.

Samer and Suleiman Al-Qaq also emptied their homes in Silwan, after the municipality's decision to demolish them under the pretext of building without a permit.
