Silwan…Clashes, arrests and assaults during the demolition of the Rajabi family building
May 10, 2022

On Tuesday, the Israeli municipal bulldozers demolished the building of Sami Rajabi in the Ein Al-Lozeh neighborhood in Silwan, under the pretext of building without a permit.

Faris Rajabi explained that the building consists of 3 floors, the ground floor contains commercial shops, and the rest are residential apartments, where Sami Rajabi, and his sons Louay, Suhaib, Firas, and Faris live.

Rajabi added that the building has been in existence since 2002, and the family tried, before starting construction, to obtain the necessary licenses, but to no avail, so it was forced to build while attempting to complete the licensing procedures.

Rajabi added that the family spent years in the municipal departments to license the building, and in the courts to freeze demolition decisions, and large sums of money were imposed on them for “building violations”, pointing out that at the end of last year the court issued the final demolition decision, and it was frozen until the family received a call from the police in the first days Eid al-Fiter to inform them that the demolition will take place after the end of Eid.

Rajabi explained that the forces stormed the family's building after blowing up its doors, and expelled the young men by force, "pushing and hitting", and removed them from the surroundings of the building, while the women made an attempt to empty the apartments, where they were given an hour to do so.

Rajabi explained that the demolition took place on the largest part of the furniture, as the family was prevented from taking out all the contents.

The process of besieging and demolishing the building continued from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon, during which the forces attacked the family members, youths, neighbors and press crews.

In the evening, the forces stormed the area resulting in confrontations where the forces fired tear gas canisters randomly at the houses.

The Red Crescent said that its crews dealt with 22 injuries in Silwan, including 6 injuries during the demolition process, in addition to 16 injuries in the evening hours.

On Tuesday, the forces arrested Hazem Rajabi, during the storming of the building, and the young man, Yazan Al-Qadi, from Silwan.
