Violent clashes rupture the peace of Friday prayers once again
April 9, 2011

Clashes erupted yesterday in Silwan between Israeli forces and Palestinian residents following the midday Friday prayers in the Al-Bustan protest tent. Israeli forces targeted a group of journalists and medics on the scene of clashes near Samer Sarhan Street. Heavy amounts of tear gas were fired wantonly throughout the neighborhood, which was met with stones and Molotov cocktails by Palestinian youth. Israeli settlers aided the armed forces by acting as lookouts, and alerting them to the whereabouts of protesters. One resident was shot by a rubber-coated steel bullet, with dozens more suffering the suffocating effects of tear gas inhalation. Confrontations raged in Ein Silwan Street near several settlement outposts on the outskirts of Wadi Hilweh district.
