After being arrested for a year…the exoneration of Amjad Mahmoud from Esawyeh and releasing him
The District court judge exonerated on Wednesday 23-year old Amjad Mahmoud Mohammad Mahmoud from the village of Esawyeh from the charges against him and was immediately released after spending a whole year in prison. Amjad Mahmoud was arrested on 22/12/2012 while walking near the entrance of the village and was severely beaten and assaulted using electric shocks, and was then charged with throwing Molotov cocktails at an Israeli military vehicle. Amjad said after being released from the District court that the judge’s decision was based on the obvious contradiction between the testimonies of police individuals in addition to the lack of a confession by him. Amjad also said that the decision was surprising and said: “he refused to release me from before even with financial bails and conditions, and the prosecution insisted on arresting me and accusing me of charges I did not commit.” The session was supposed to be held on Thursday but Amjad’s lawyer advanced it by one day and confirmed that he will file a case to compensate him for the days he was arrested without a reason. Mahmoud pointed out that he suffered for two months from the effects of the beating he was exposed to during the arrest, and said: “after I was arrested, I was unable to walk or move for 10 days, and the young men at the prison were helping me to even go to the restroom, and all due to the brutal assault I was exposed to.” Amjad was transferred between Al-Maskobyeh, Asqalan prison and then Ayshel prison. He also explained that the administration of Ayshel prison continues to suppress Palestinian prisoners through morning and night checks to their rooms, and the assault and damage they cause to the contents of the rooms as well as the lack to provide the basic needs for the prisoners.
