Extending the arrest of 5 Jerusalemite children and extending the house arrest of a mentally disabled
The District and Magistrate courts judges extended last Thursday the arrest of 5 Jerusalemite children and also extended the duration of the house arrest imposed on Ahmad Daoud Obeid who is a mentally disabled until next March. The Magistrate court judge extended the arrest of 3 children from the neighbourhood of Ras Al-Amood until Monday on charges of throwing stones and Molotov cocktails; note that they were arrested on Thursday early morning hours after raiding their homes and they are: 16-year old Mohammad Ghanem, 17-year old Jihad Hamed and 17-year old Ehab Abu Qalbein. Lawyer Rami Othman, lawyer Jad Qadamani from the Prisoner’s Club and lawyer Mohammad Mahmoud from Al-Dameer organization defended the three children. Wadi Hilweh Information Center was informed that the District court judge extended the arrest of Mohammad Ahmad Atwan and Amir Al-Baseet until 26/01/2014 as the judge approved the indictment submitted against them during last Thursday’s hearing session and which includes charges of throwing Molotov cocktails in the neighbourhood of Jabal Al-Mukabber to disrupt the car traffic and so throw stones at Israeli vehicles which led to the injury of an Israeli child as she suffered severe wounds in her head. The judge scheduled a hearing session for the two children on 07/01/2014 to discuss the possibility of releasing them with a financial bail. Ahmad Daoud Obeid… In a related matter, a hearing session was held for 19-year Ahmad Daoud Obeid from the village of Esawyeh. Ahmad was arrested and charged of throwing stones at Israeli forces on 27/08/2013 and was released at the beginning of September on conditions of a financial bail and house arrest until completing all legal procedures against him. Ahmad’s lawyer, Mohammad Mahmoud, explained that the judge extended the duration of the house arrest imposed on him until 06/03/2014 in order to present him to a psychiatrist one more time. Ahmad is mentally disabled and the court lately presented him to a psychiatrist who released a report the next day saying that Ahmad is healthy and does not suffer from any psychological illness to prevent his trial. During the lawyer’s defense, Mohammad Mahmoud said: “if an Israeli committed a crime then a report will be immediately released saying that he is mentally disabled”. Mohammad requested to present his client to a psychiatrist again and told the judge that the disability and mental illness suffered by his client are clearly visible and do not need any reports.
