Madaa Silwan Creative Center concludes the camp activities of "I Love You Silwan 9"
Madaa Silwan Creative Center concluded the summer camp activities of "I Love You Silwan 9" with a march that toured the neighborhood of Wadi Hilweh and with a festival in the playground of Wadi Hilweh.
The march initiated from Wadi Hilweh playground and walked in the streets of the neighbourhood reaching the area of Umayyad palaces adjacent to the southern wall of Al-Aqsa Mosque. The participants launched balloons with the Palestinian flag's colors and chanted slogans for Jerusalem, Silwan and Al-Aqsa.
Nearly 300 children participated in the march between the ages of 5-15 and raised Palestinian flags and banners saying "I Love You Silwan" and also wore unified shirts with "I Love You Silwan" slogans written in both Arabic and English.
The march ended with a festival held in Wadi Hilweh playground that included several activities for the summer camp's children (music, dabkeh, plays, songs and gymnastics). It is noteworthy that the children learned and practiced the activities during the summer camp.
Also, members of "Dandara" group from Madaa Creative Center trained a group of children on "Rap" music and performed during the festival.
Majd Gheith, director of the summer camp, organized the camp for the 9th consecutive year in Silwan. It is one of the "free" summer camps in Jerusalem amid the tough financial conditions the Palestinians face in addition to the lack of playgrounds and public parks in Jerusalem.
The summer camp' activities included games, recreational and awareness activities that aim at enhancing the Palestinian identity of Jerusalem and the children's belonging to their country and town (Silwan). The camp also defutes the Israeli narrative about Israel's righteousness in the town in an entertaining manner commensurate with the age of the children.
