Sentencing lawyer Shireen Essawi and her brother Midhat
The District Court in Jerusalem sentenced last Monday the Jerusalemite lawyer Shireen Essawi and her brother Midhat for actual imprisonment of 4 years and 8 years, respectively.
Amjad Abu Asab, head of Jerusalemites detainees and prisoners families committee, explained that the District judge sentenced 38-year old Shireen Essawi for 4 years of actual imprisonment and her 42-year old brother Midhat for 8 years of actual imprisonment.
Abu Asab added that the lawyer and her brother were convicted of communicating with the prisoners’ movement inside the occupation prisoners through an attorney’s office run by Shireen; the court considered the communication as a means of terrorism.
Abu Asab explained that Shireen was arrested on 7/3/2014 within a series of arrests that targeted a group of Jerusalemite lawyers while Midhat was arrested on 13/3/2014. Shireen was previously arrested more than once and was under house-arrest for several months. Midhat was also arrested multiple times and spent more than 20 years in prison and was under house-arrest for some time as well; he is married and has one daughter.
