April 19, 2016

The District Court judges convicted on Tuesday the main suspect in killing the child Mohammad Abu Khdeir and found him guilty of kidnapping and intentionally killing the child.

Lawyer Mohannad Jbara, Abu Khdeir family’s lawyer, explained that the judges convicted on Tuesday Yousef Hayem Ben David with kidnapping and killing the child Mohammad Abu Khdeir and attempting to kidnap the child Zalloum from the neighborhood of Beit Hanina. The judges refused the reports submitted by the defense lawyer of Ben David claiming that he suffers from mental disorders and is not eligible for trial.

Jbara added that the judges confirmed during the session that Ben David is completely aware of his actions and is eligible for trial and he also does not suffer from any mental disorders that prevent his trial.

Jbara also added that the “District Psychiatrist” of Jerusalem confirmed at the end of last February that Ben David is eligible for trial and does not suffer from any mental or psychological disorders based on the surveillance cameras of the prison and hospital in addition to the recordings of the enactment of the crime and his confessions before consulting with his lawyer.

The judges scheduled a sentencing session for Ben David on the 3rd of May. According to the Israeli law, a life sentence will be the minimum sentence Ben David will receive as being the main killer and after being convicted of “intentionally killing” Abu Khdeir; other sanctions and punishment will also be imposed on him.

It is noteworthy that Ben David and two minors kidnapped the child Mohammad Abu Khdeir from the neighborhood of Shu’fat and burned him alive after assaulting him leading to his Martyrdom in July 2014. The Israeli court sentenced one of the suspects for life in prison while the other was sentenced for 21 years for their roles in kidnapping and burning the Martyr.
