Sheikh Jarrah - The Occupation Gives the Sabbagh Families until the 23rd of January to Evacuate their Homes
The so-called “Israeli Execution and Enforcement Department” recently handed Al Sabbagh Family a warning to evacuate their building in “Karam Al Ja'ouni” in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in Jerusalem, giving them until 01/23/2019 to carry out the evacuation.
The building is home to 5 brothers from Al Sabbagh family and houses 45 people, mostly children.
Mohammad Al Sabbagh explained that they have been living in the building since 1956, after their displacement from their lands and homes in Jaffa, where the real estate was built in the region based on an agreement between the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Refugees and the Jordanian Ministry of Construction.
The families living in Karam Al Ja'ouni were surprised in 1972 by cases and eviction notices filed against them by two Jewish associations claiming ownership of the land since 1885. Since then, the families have been fighting the struggle in the occupation courts to prove their right to land and homes.
The families explained that the Israeli Supreme Court rejected last November the discussion of ownership of land under the pretext that “too many years had passed”, where the decision was in line with the decision of the District Court in 2012.
The families asked the defense team to expand the judges’ committee from three to five, but the court rejected their request. Thus, it recognized the ownership of the land to Jews and those who presented a forged paper to the courts in 1972.
The area of the land is about 19 acres, which is inhabited by about 100 Palestinian families, most of whom were displaced from the 1948 Palestinian territories.
