Assaults and violent clashes…dozens of injuries and arrests
On Monday evening, the occupation forces attacked the funeral of the Jerusalemite martyr Walid al-Sharif and suppressed hundreds of mourners with tear gas, sound bombs and rubber bullets, in addition to beating them with batons and spraying them with wastewater.
Dozens of injuries and arrests were recorded during the repression of the funeral. The repression began from the first moments of the starting of the funeral in Al-Tur, then Herods Gate and Salah El-Din Street, all the way to the cemetery during his burial.
The Wadi Hilweh Information Center - Jerusalem stated that the occupation forces besieged Al-Maqased Hospital before handing over the body of the martyr, then the forces were deployed in Al-Tur and at its entrances and junctions and closed some of them. As the martyr’s body left the hospital in an ambulance, the forces followed the ambulance and completely surrounded it, and after it passed through the main intersection, it prevented the motorcade from continuing to follow the ambulance.
The center added that the forces stopped a vehicle and attacked passengers with batons, and suddenly fired live bullets directly at it, then closed the Al-Tur junction and prevented the pedestrians and cars from continuing to participate in the funeral.
Rubber bullets were also fired at the ambulance transporting the martyr, which shattered the rear window, in addition to causing damage to its interior.
In Al-Aqsa, the young men carried the martyr and marched and chanted for him, and after praying for him, the funeral procession began and marched in the squares of Al-Aqsa, and upon reaching Herods Gate, the forces suppressed them with beatings, batons and pushing, despite that, they marched towards the cemetery, and the forces stopped them again at the entrance to Salah El-Din Street.
The center added that the forces surrounded the funeral in large numbers in Salah El-Din Street, and as soon as they entered the cemetery, the forces stormed the place, and attacked the mourners with bombs and rubber bullets.
The center stated that the forces had arrived in the Herods Gate area and Salah Al-Din Street before the arrival of the funeral, and about half an hour before its arrival, the forces suppressed hundreds and forcibly removed them from the place.
After the funeral, the forces carried out mass arrests from inside the cemetery and from the adjacent streets. The lawyer of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center, Firas Al-Jabrini, stated that the number of arrests from Jerusalem amounted to 35 detainees.
Among the arrests was the injured Nader al-Sharif, who was transferred to "Shaare Zedek Hospital" and the forces stormed the hospital room andordered his family members to leave the place.
The Palestinian Red Crescent said that its crews dealt with 71 injuries during the confrontations in Jerusalem, 13 injuries were transferred to receive treatment in the hospital, and a paramedic was among the injured.
Martyr Walid Al-Sharif, died last Saturday on May 14thafter sustaining injuries during clashes that erupted in Al-Aqsa Mosque on the third Friday of Ramadan.
