A rubber bullet hits Amir Haddad in the head, compressing his optic nerve
April 12, 2025

Amir Haddad, 12, lies in a recovery bed at Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital after being hit by a rubber bullet that fractured his skull.

Last Thursday, while Amir was returning home in the Shu’fat refugee camp after buying bird food from a nearby store, he was shot with a rubber bullet at close range while riding his bicycle.

Amir's father explained that the rubber bullet hit his son’s skull directly above his eye, fracturing the bone and compressing the optic nerve. This caused the eye to be unable to move to the left. As a result, he underwent surgery to remove the bone from the eye.

The father added that Amir still suffers from swelling in and around his eye, as well as persistent burning and pain. He noted that doctors will conduct follow-up eye examinations to ensure there is no further damage. "The child was transferred to the treatment center in Shu’fat refugee camp, and then Red Crescent crews transferred him to Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital.

As the ambulance crossed the military checkpoint, soldiers stopped it and asked, 'Is this the injured child?' They then allowed it to pass."

Raids on the Shu’fat refugee camp in Jerusalem are frequent, during which forces assault residents with tear gas and rubber bullets, and raid homes and businesses.
