Her imprisonment has been postponed, and an appeal has been filed against her sentence: latest updates in journalist Bayan al-Jo’beh's case
The Jerusalem District Court approved a request to delay the transfer of journalist Bayan al-Jo’beh to prison, where she is to serve her 20-month sentence.
Al-Jo’beh was set to report to prison on Sunday, September 6, to start her sentence following her conviction for "incitement" and "supporting a terrorist organization" due to social media posts.
After the verdict, al-Jo’beh’s lawyer, Hamza Qutteineh, appealed the conviction and sentence. The court set a hearing for January 5, 2027.
The court's most recent ruling states that al-Jo’beh will remain free until the appeal process concludes, delaying her transfer to prison next Sunday.
On February 28, 2025, occupation forces detained al-Jo’beh inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque. She was there with her husband, journalist Mohammad Al-Sadiq, and her two daughters, on the eve of Ramadan, during the crescent moon sighting.
After hours of questioning, she was released because of her health issues, as she was in her last month of a "high-risk" pregnancy. Her release was conditional, requiring house arrest and a ban on social media, restrictions that stayed until her sentencing last June.
The journalist Al-Jo'beh is a mother of three children: Ghada (7), Bissan (4), and Yazan (1). She had her youngest child while under over 15 months of house arrest.
The prison sentence raises serious worries for the journalist's three children, who are still in school and rely on her daily guidance. This punishment could separate them from their mother for a long time, possibly affecting their education, childhood, and overall family stability.
