December 14, 2016

A young Palestinian man from the city of Hebron passed away on Wednesday after being shot in Al-Wad Street in the Old City of Jerusalem under the pretext of stabbing an Israeli policeman with a “screwdriver”.

Israeli reports said that the young man came from the area of Damascus Gate and stabbed a policeman in his head using a screwdriver. He also stabbed two other Israelis before he was shot by the Israeli police present in the area. Other reports said the young man stabbed two Israeli policemen.

The occupation police said the 21-year old Palestinian is from the city of Hebron and was transferred to Hadassah Esawyeh hospital for treatment; his injuries were classified as critical.

Witnesses said the young man was left bleeding on the ground for more than 15 minutes without providing him with any treatment. A Palestinian doctor managed to reach the young man after being prevented at first from reaching him and providing him with the necessary treatment. He was then allowed to conduct preliminary check-ups until the Israeli paramedics arrived.

Closure and assault

After the shooting incident, the forces closed the area around Al-Wad Street and assaulted the young men in order to move them away from the area. An eyewitness said the occupation forces assaulted the young men and beat them with batons and placed barricades in the area to prevent anyone from approaching the injured young man.

The forces closed several intersections in the city following the shooting especially the area of Herod’s Gate and prevented vehicles from passing through the streets; they also closed Damascus Gate and prevented locals from going in or out.

Wadi Hilweh Information Center explained that the forces closed Damascus Gate and prevented the locals (mostly women and students) from entering the Old City while they were heading to their homes.

Furthermore, the forces harassed the young men in Sultan Suleiman Street and randomly fired live bullets in the air to disperse them.

Amjad Abu Asab, head of Jerusalemites detainees and prisoners families committee, said the occupation forces arrested 15-year old Ali Ma’tooq and 15-year old Mohammad Issam Eid from the area of Damascus Gate in Jerusalem.

The center was also informed that the forces arrested 15-year old Ahmad Mousa Haymooni from Damascus Gate.
