Following a municipality’s order- A Jerusalemite self-demolishes his house in the village of Esawyeh
January 17, 2017

Firas Salah Mahmoud self-demolished his house in the village of Esawyeh under the pretext of building without a permit.

Mahmoud explained to Wadi Hilweh Information Center that he started removing the doors and windows of the house last night, and started the demolition process today to avoid any fines by the municipality.

Mahmoud added that he started building his house nearly 8 months ago; it is ready and he intended to move-in last week.

Mahmoud was forced to demolish his house after being informed by the municipality and police that a fine of 300 thousand NIS will be imposed on him as “demolition costs” for the municipality and the forces accompanying them.

Mahmoud said the house cost him nearly 250 thousand NIS and he had to borrow money to finish it as he intended to move-in with his wife and three children.

The house is 130 square meters, and Mahmoud attempted to obtain a building permit but to no avail; the court insisted to demolish it under the pretext of building without a permit.
