On Tuesday, the Israeli municipality forced two Jerusalemite families to self-demolish their homes in the towns of Beit Hanina and Jabal Al-Mukabber in the city.
Jabal Al-Mukabber
Ali Aziz Aweisat self-demolished his apartment after trying to obtain a building permit for 5 years.
Aweisat explained that his apartment is on the third floor of a building and consists of 3 rooms and their utilities, where he lives with his wife and two children.
He added that the court issued the demolition decision a year ago and gave the family until last August to demolish the house, and imposed a 32,000 shekel “demolition violation” fine during the court, and last month, municipality staff stormed the house and demanded the demolition be carried out until mid-October.
Aweisat explained that the municipality, during the licensing procedures, demanded "impossible conditions and very large sums" for its licensing.
He added that he had to live in a room with his family, after the house was demolished, because he was unable to rent an apartment.
Beit Hanina
Maya Nashashibi explained that her family was forced to demolish the building she has been living in for five years.
Nashashibi added that the building consists of two floors, and 10 people live in it, and the municipality gave the building owner a deadline to demolish it until November.
