The family of Riyad Sumrein, from Silwan, spent 18 days between hospitals, treatment centers, investigation sessions and courts, after dozens of settlers attacked family members near their house.

Riyad Sumrein suffered fractures in the jaw and severe swelling in the face, while his son Laith suffered from bleeding in the eye, and his son Abdel Karim was assaulted by the occupation forces, and he sustained hand fractures and facial wounds while he was under house arrest by a court decision.

At the end of last May “31/05/2022”, while Riyad Sumrein, 55, was accompanied by his son Laith on their way to the house in the afternoon in the Wadi al-Rababeh neighborhood in their vehicle, they were surprised by a group of settlers in the neighborhood who looked at them, and as they continued driving “a few meters away”,a second group of settlers was in the place... They assaulted them and severely beat them.

Riyad Sumrein comes back in his memory after recovering and recounts what happened with him, he said: "Laith and I are in the middle between two groups of settlers, near our house, there were dozens of them. They attacked the vehicle with weapons, woods and stones and forced Laith out of the vehicle and pointed a weapon towards him. I rushed to protect my son, one of them hit me with a big stone in the face, and I was taken to the hospital, during which the police came and provided protection for the settlers and accused us of assaulting them!”

Sumrein added: "Today, I was discharged from the hospital after 17 days of treatment, during which I underwent an urgent facial surgery, and a "plastic tube" was implanted to extract infections from my face.”

Sumrein explained that he was discharged from the hospital, but still needs medical follow-up.

As for Abdul Karim Riyad Sumrein, 15 years old, he has been suffering from house arrest and pain in his hand since the end of last month. His mother explained that the forces came to the place after settlers attacked her husband and son, and attacked the people. Abdul Karim was severely beaten, arrested, brought before the court and released under the condition of house arrest.

The mother of the boy, Abdul Karim, explained: "After the release of Abdul, he was presented to the court several times, and the house arrest was extended again."

The lawyer of the Wadi Hilweh Information Center, Muhammad Mahmoud, stated that the Public Prosecution filed on Thursday, an indictment against the boy, Abdul Karim, which included “assaulting the police, causing injury, and obstructing the work of the police.”
