Pictures- A comprehensive strike in Jerusalem's schools
September 19, 2022

On Monday, 19/9/2022, a comprehensive strike took place in the schools of the city of Jerusalem, after a call by the national and Islamic forces in the city, to reject the attempts of the occupation municipality to impose distorted Palestinian curricula on schools.

The schools of Jerusalem were emptied of students, after the full commitment to the strike, and signs were hung on the school doors and in the streets that read: “Yes to the Palestinian curriculum...a comprehensive strike...no to the distorted curriculum.”

The occupation municipality and the Ministry of Education have tightened restrictions and procedures against Jerusalem schools for several months, the most prominent of which is the decision of the Ministry of Education in the occupation government to withdraw the license of 6 schools in the city of Jerusalem, for a period of one year, under the pretext of “incitement in textbooks against the occupation state and army.” The decision was issued against the Ibrahimiya School in Al-Sowaneh, and Al-Iman Schools in all its branches in Beit Hanina. The Ministry requires schools to teach the curriculum that it is printing and is distorted from the Palestinian curriculum. Last August, on the eve of the opening of the new school year, the Ministry of Education in the occupation government sent a letter to several schools in the city of Jerusalem entitled "Textbooks containing inflammatory content in East Jerusalem schools", where it threatened to withdraw the schools’ licenses in the event that "an educational institution that teaches in textbooks containing inflammatory materials is found."

National and Islamic forces

As a result, the national and Islamic forces in the city of Jerusalem announced a comprehensive strike in Jerusalem schools, rejecting all attempts to impose a false curriculum on Jerusalemite students.

The national and Islamic forces affirmed their firm position and reject all attempts to impose the fake or updated curriculum on students in all schools, regardless of their academic references, and stressed that they only accept the Palestinian curriculum for student education.

In a statement, the national and Islamic forces rejected all forms of financial extortion practiced by the Ministry of Education and the Municipality against school administrations in Jerusalem and the policy of overt and veiled threats against them.

The national and Islamic forces demanded that international institutions stand up to their responsibilities and prevent the occupation and its executive branches from invading Jerusalem's schools, and called on them to protect educational institutions in the city and students.

In a statement, the national and Islamic forces called on the Palestinian government to provide real alternatives, and to secure the actual needs and resources necessary to protect educational institutions and our Palestinian curriculum, away from loose slogans and phrases.

There are 4 educational references in the city of Jerusalem, which are: schools affiliated with the municipality and the Israeli Ministry of Education, private schools, Islamic endowment schools, and agency schools.

The Committee of Parents of Students in Jerusalem clarified that the occupation authorities have been trying for several years to impose the distorted Palestinian curriculum on schools as it reprints the Palestinian curriculum, deletes many lessons, paragraphs and Quranic verses, and adds some texts calling for coexistence.

For example: in the reading and text book for the tenth grade, the topics of expression related to Palestinian refugees and the right of return, and the Palestinians’ adherence to the land and homeland despite the occupation were deleted, and poetry verses (what is the value of a human being without a homeland without knowledge, which are mentioned in the book of reading and texts) have also been deleted.

In the Book of Recitation and Tajweed for the eighth grade, words in Qur’anic verses from Surat Al-Kahf and the provisions related to it have been replaced, in addition to the distortion in the 8th grade reading and texts book, where a text on the description of Jerusalem and an activity on Palestinian poets was mentioned in the original Palestinian curriculum, but in the distorted curriculum, the text and activity were omitted.

The Israeli occupation authorities also deleted the Palestinian flag and all national symbols from all books, although their presence is the right of the publisher, and no one else has the legal right to remove them.

The Israeli occupation authorities printed Palestinian books, while deleting Quranic verses and texts that harmed the educational concept. So how can the student read a poem from which poetic verses were deleted, or at times entire poems were deleted such as a poem by the poet Abdel Rahim Mahmoud, or delete certain words so that the poem appears as a crossword.
