Demolishing 3 homes in Jerusalem
December 31, 2022

On Saturday, the Arameen and Al-A’war families demolished their homes in Jerusalem, under the pretext of building without a permit.

Arameen family

Mustafa Arameen explained that the municipality forced him to self-demolish two apartments in the Wadi al-Joz neighborhood, the area of each apartment is 70 square meters.

He explained that he had built the two apartments since 2010, and tried to license them without success, pointing out that the municipality stormed the place last Thursday, and demanded that he carry out the demolition before Sunday, otherwise its machinery will do so, and he must pay the “demolition fee” of 70 thousand shekels.

Arameen said: "We have no other home after the demolition of the two apartments. I moved the contents to a warehouse. We will look for a house to live in.”

Seven people lived in the two apartments.

Al-A’war family

As for the Al-A’war family in the Ein Al-Lozeh neighborhood in Silwan, they emptied the contents of the apartment and started the process of self-demolition of the roof and windows, while the demolition process will continue in the coming days.

Mahmoud Al-A’war explained that the municipality imposed a building fine on the family in 2015, at a value of 20,000 shekels, and in 2021, a new fine of 50,000 shekels was imposed on the family. Despite the obligation to pay it and attempts to license it, the municipality issued a final demolition decision.

Al-A’war explained that the municipality demanded that he carry out the demolition, or impose on him “an actual prison sentence of 200 days,” or pay “the demolition fee in the amount of 25,000 shekels.”
