Pictures- Excavation works in Bab Al-Rahmeh Cemetery
On Sunday, the Nature and Parks Authority’s crews carried out excavations in the cemetery of Bab al-Rahmeh, adjacent to the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Wadi Hilweh Information Center explained that the workers of the "Nature and Parks Authority" guarded by the occupation forces carried out digging works in the vicinity of several graves in the cemetery of Bab al-Rahmeh, and dug the sides of some of them and smashed the gravestones, to install iron poles, as part of the Israeli plans in the cemetery.
The center added that the occupation forces provided full protection for the workers of the Nature Authority, and prevented access to the site of the excavations.
The Nature Authority claimed that it had obtained a court decision authorizing it to work in the cemetery.
Bab al-Rahmeh cemetery is one of the most famous Islamic cemeteries in Jerusalem. It extends from Lions Gate to the end of the wall of Al-Aqsa Mosque near the Umayyad palaces in the south. It covers an area of about 23 Dunoms (23000 square meters). The Israeli government seeks to confiscate parts of the cemetery and prevent burial in parts of it to implement settlement projects in the area, including the "paths of biblical gardens," in addition to the project of the air train, which connects Mount of Olives with Al-Buraq Square through the cemetery.
