Self-demolitions persist in Jerusalem as homeowners self-demolish their structures to evade hefty fines from the Israeli municipality or to prevent damage to nearby homes and buildings caused by municipal demolition.
In Jabal al-Mukabber, the Za'atra family self-demolished three of their homes following an Israeli municipality order due to unauthorized construction.
The homes belonged to Mohammad Tawfiq Za'atra, Khalid Za'atra, and Tawfiq Za'atra and his family, housing a total of 15 people, including children.
In Silwan, the Shyoukhi family self-demolished their son Ma'moun Salem Shyoukhi's house following a final order from the Israeli municipality. Ma’moun Salem Shyoukhi stated that his son had lived in the 70-square-meter house for two years, and the municipality's demolition order displaced five individuals.
